To overcome the limitations of InfraRed (IR) remote control technology, ZigBee® RF4CE specification was first published in May 2009. It quickly became the dominant core technology that drives development of next generation remote control applications. ZigBee RF4CE technology uses IEEE 802.15.4 as its PHYsical (PHY) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layers, and builds network layer on top of them.
